This was the challenge faced by a young couple—an engineer and a book publisher—who found their home in a 1970s building in Oberkampf. Their apartment, like many from its era, had a layout that divided the day and night areas sharply, leaving little room for creativity and comfort. Thankfully, a visionary architect named Saba Ghorbanalinejad took on the task of reconfiguring this space, bringing new life and light to their home.

Ghorbanalinejad is known for her ability to transform difficult spaces, and her successful renovation of the 65-square-meter apartment is a testament to her skills. The completed project not only preserves the essence of 1970s architecture but also marries it beautifully with modern design principles. The key was rethinking the original layout, creating two large openings around a central core that promotes light flow from one side of the apartment to the other.

In designing the interior, Ghorbanalinejad chose materials that evoke warmth and elegance. The use of waxed concrete, stainless steel, and Okoumé wood showcases her refined aesthetic and respects the apartment's history. For instance, the kitchen’s sculptural island, which features an integrated Bosch cooktop, was designed to be lightweight and airy, challenging the heavy, traditional kitchen centerpieces we often see. This was further enhanced by stylish lighting, including a Joe Colombo Spider Arc Lamp from 1967, creating a harmonious blend of form and function.

A full-height library wall not only supports their love for books but also acts as a functional divider between the living area and the children’s space.
